Retail Tennis Shop Business Plan


Tennis Master Pro Shops, Inc. owns and operates tennis retail stores, known as Tennis Master Pro Shops. Each retail location markets indoor tennis instruction and custom racket fitting. These two primary revenue streams are both high in profit margin and low in inventory requirements. Custom fitted rackets are made on site from components and are marketed under the “Tennis Master” brand name. Tennis instruction and training are conducted by in-store staff under the direction of a USTA professional at each store.

A Tennis Master Pro Shop measures 5,000 sq. ft. and contains two virtual reality tennis simulations, two computer swing analysis and racket fitting systems, as well as four additional practice courts. The product range also includes brand-name and private label tennis merchandise.

Tennis Master predicts that it will grow its 15 stores to a total number of 380 stores over three years. Ten stores will become company owned, and the remainder will become franchised. Qualified regional marketing professionals will be able to sell forty Master Franchise Licenses. This will allow them to grow at the high rate that this expansion plan targets.

Tennis Master franchises as well as company-owned shops will all be part of the corporate umbrella of Tennis Master Pro Shops, Inc. The combined revenues are expected to reach $6.8 million in year 1, $14.3 million by Year 2, and $23 millions in Year 3. Profits will be $1.8million in Year 1. They will rise to $5 million by Year 2 and then reach $9.3million by Year 3. In the same timeframe, profits will rise from 26.7% down to 40.3%. These highlights of the over-all plan are illustrated in the chart below:

1.1 Objectives

Tennis Master aims to be the largest indoor retail training facility in the country. Our ultimate goal is to reach 400 retail locations. As our ultimate goal, we have targeted 40 Master Franchises. Each Master Franchise has ten retail locations.

  • Year 1&#8211’10 Master Franchises and 60 Retail Stores.
  • Year 2&#821120 Master Franchises with 120 retail stores (Cumulative, 30 Master Franchises with 180 retail stores).
  • Year 3&#821110 Master franchises and 200 retail locations (Cumulative : 40 Master franchises and 380 retail shops).

A table illustrating this expansion plan is in Appendix “D” (Note: this is a customer-included appendix; not part of a standard business plan).

The over-all retail objective for each store is to achieve 25% utilization of available training time. All the projections in this plan are based on timed growth up to the 25% utilization level. This level of utilization will result in highly profitable retail stores. To ensure the success of your plan, you will need to have profitable stores as well as successful franchise sales.

1.2 Mission

Tennis Master Pro Shops, Inc. strives to offer the finest indoor tennis training available. We seek to promote the enjoyment of the game of tennis by helping tennis enthusiasts of all levels play better tennis. This product will only be delivered if the customer is willing to receive individual instruction on tennis fundamentals and equipment fitting. We offer all of our products and services at times and locations convenient to our customers.

1.3 Keys To Success

The keys to success at Tennis Master&#8217s business are:

  1. Attainment our store expansion goals (both for company stores as well as franchise stores).
  2. Attainment of 25% minimum utilization of training time in each retail location.
  3. Obtaining initial capitalization.
  4. Executing franchise marketing program.
  5. Executing a retail advertising program
  6. Conversion of existing stores into a training/racket fitting format.
  7. Careful attention to store locations by using economic and tennis playing demographics.
  8. Control of both the franchise and company stores by management
  9. Cash flow management.
