In Brief
Unite for Youth is an agency that offers mentoring programs for middle- and high-school youth in the Greater Claremont. This program will work in partnership with local schools and the juvenile justice system. Unite for Youth’s goal is to foster a commitment to young people that will promote pro-social friendships, strong interpersonal skills, and reassert a sense of hope in the future. It is only through building relationships with youth that a sense can of individual responsibility can be reestablished. Youth will feel pride in their accomplishments and have the motivation to continue on the path to adulthood.
Through repeated failures in the classroom and the development of destructive habits, at-risk young people have lost faith in the possibilities that await them if they are successful in putting their lives together. Young people need to be in an inclusive, caring learning environment that encourages them to do their best and promotes respect.
Unite for Youth is a program that is in direct response to the growing number of young people that are either falling through the cracks at school or are already entangled with the juvenile court system. The goal of the program is to identify youths who are going to have a turbulent transition to adulthood and offer positive support system to avoid the pitfalls that can derail their lives. The program has different goals at each level. However, the overall goal is to empower youths to make positive decisions in their lives.
Unite for Youth will be focusing mainly on middle school students. In three years, half of the system’s students will be in Middle School. This age group can be problematic and is a good time to provide mentoring.
Unite for Youth’s mentoring programs pair youth with mentors for 12 months. The two of them will take part in weekly planned activities. This will strengthen their bond and encourage hopefulness and confidence. Mentors will receive ongoing training throughout the year, and they will attend monthly meetings to discuss the young person’s progress.
Unite for Youth, over time, will become a resource for young people as well as mentors and the larger community.
