Helping Hand is a tax exempt, not-for profit food bank that services all of Johnson County. Helping Hand’s purpose is to alleviate hunger within Johnson County. This is done by collecting, growing, packaging, and distributing food through a network serving the target population. Our services include food boxes programs, emergency food programmes, and a farm for youth at risk that offers opportunities for self-sufficiency for youth. Helping Hand is supported financially by the county, charitable organizations, and corporate sponsorship.
Around 20% Johnson County residents are eligible to receive Helping Hand. Our client base consists of low-income families who require emergency assistance to provide food for their families. Nearly half of those served by the program are children. Helping Hand maintains a warehouse in which we store donated or rescued foods for distribution. This program solicits food donations from local food growers, processors, wholesalers, wholesalers, as well as other food processors. Helping Hand also collects food donations at restaurants for distribution to service program programs.
According to estimates, Helping Hand’s services will be more needed by children over the next five decades. Johnson County is booming and new families are arriving to seek employment. These families can be helped by a variety of programs. Because we are able to respond quickly with one of the most essential resources these families require, Helping Hand is a valuable resource. Our services increase the ability of families and children to take care of themselves. Helping Hand’s current services are a minimal investment compared with the cost of ignoring hunger in the county as well as the impact it has over a number health and crime issues.
1.1 Mission
Helping Hands exists to relieve hunger in Johnson County. They solicit, collect and grow food and distribute it through a network. We offer food boxes, emergency shelters and congregate meals sites as well as residential treatment services and children’s programs.
1.2 Objectives
This new initiative is designed to create a food bank that will serve all of Johnson County, Washington. These are our objectives:
- Establish a network for local growers, retailers and wholesalers to make donations in Johnson County.
- Establish a youth farm which will provide employment opportunities for “at risk” youth.
- Collect over four million pounds of food the first year of operation. Each year, increase collection by 20%.
- Effectively distribute the food to low-income families that make up over 20% of Johnson County.
- Start-up funding of $200,000 through private charities, government financial support and corporate sources
- Fundraising activity to raise an additional $100,000
